AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The latest numbers from the FBI show that violent crime is up in a few major metro areas this week, as the nation braces for President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office.
Fort Wayne newspaper beeville, Minnesota newspaper, Fort Wayne newspaper, and Minneapolis paper all reported some increase in violent crime.
The newspaper in Minneapolis had a total of 18 crimes reported on Monday, including six homicides.
Forty-one of the 52 homicides in the Fort Wayne metro area were committed by an offender under the age of 18, the newspaper reported.
The other 10 were committed while the offender was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The Fort Wayne police department says there were six murders Monday.
Fort Worth has recorded a total number of homicides of more than 3,100 so far this year, according to police data.
A total of 6,857 murders were reported in the first five months of the year.
The Chicago area is still seeing the biggest increase in violence.
In Fort Worth, the number of reported homicides has increased to 972.
Fort Knox, Kentucky, has recorded 3,879 homicides so far, up from 2,742 last year, the Associated Press reported.
Fort Knox police Chief John Pappas says the department is focused on finding and apprehending criminals, rather than the overall number of murders.
He says that when there is a spike in the numbers, police focus on how they can reduce the crime.
In the past year, Fort Knox has been the scene of a rash of burglaries, thefts and car break-ins, but Pappa says the increase in crime has been a gradual thing.
The number of burglars has been down, and the number in cars has been up, he said.
He said he was surprised by the number reported by Fort Knox.
“You’re seeing a decrease, but we’re still seeing it,” he said in an interview.
“We’re still getting some reports of thefts and cars being broken into.
It’s definitely a different type of thing than the last few years.”
He said the increase was the result of more officers and equipment, and not necessarily increased crime.
“The increase was due to more officers patrolling and equipment,” he told WCPO-TV.
“The increase is due to the increased police presence in the city.”
Authorities in other areas have been focusing on stopping crime.
Fort Myers police chief Tim Tomsen said Monday that more officers have been assigned to the city this year.
In Atlanta, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that 639 crimes were reported Monday, a 24 percent increase from the same time last year.
There were 3,732 crimes reported in Atlanta from Jan. 1 through May 1.
A total of 565 crimes were committed in the Atlanta metro area in the same period, a 19 percent increase, according, to the Atlanta Police Department.More:
